Dr. Marie A. Bernard serves as Deputy Director of the National Institute on Aging (NIA) at the National Institutes of Health. As NIA's senior geriatrician, she serves as the principal advisor to the NIA Director, and with the Director oversees approximately $3.1 billion in aging and Alzheimer's disease research supported annually by the Institute. For the Department of Health and Human Services, she co-chairs two Healthy People 2020/2030 objectives - 1) Older Adults, and 2) Dementias, including Alzheimer's disease. Dr. Bernard also co-chairs the NIH Inclusion Governance Committee, which monitors inclusion in clinical research by sex/gender, race/ethnicity, and age; including pediatric and older adult subjects. Prior to arriving at NIH, she was the founding chair and endowed professor of the Reynolds Department of Geriatrics at University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and the Associate Chief of Staff for Geriatrics and Extended Care at the Oklahoma City Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She received an undergraduate education at Bryn Mawr College, an M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, and trained in internal medicine at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, where she served as Chief Resident.
