Joel Rubin edits stories about the criminal justice system. A native of Maine, he moved to Los Angeles in 2003 for a summer internship at The Times and never left. As an editor, Rubin oversees the paper's coverage of policing, federal and local courts, incarceration, and other issues of criminal justice. Before editing, Rubin wrote about federal courts and agencies and, prior to that, covered the Los Angeles Police Department for several years. He also covered the region’s public schools and spent a memorable few months in 2003 following wildfires as they burned Southern California.
