Michael V Smith, MD, FACC, FACS, FCCP joined Aetna in April of 2020 as the Senior Medical Director supporting Business Development and Clinical Strategy for Medicaid. He was appointed Deputy Chief Health Equity Officer in October 2021 and Senior Clinical Solutions Medical Director for Health Equity in April of 2022. Prior to joining CVSHealth/Aetna, he was at Cigna where he led the Medicare clinical strategy team for the government business division. In this capacity, he drove operational effectiveness workstreams in Utilization Management, Care Management, Quality Management, and Population Health Management and led the cross-functional 2021 Future Strategy development team for Medicare. He has previously held leadership positions with Heritage Provider Network as CMO of Healthcare Partners IPA/MSO in New York, and Wellpoint (now Anthem) as a Regional Vice-President and Medical Director Medicare for their Central Region. Michael brings more than two decades of clinical and leadership experience including serving on the clinical faculty at Morehouse School of Medicine, and as the Department of Surgery Co-chair, Medical Director of Oncology, and Chief of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery at Atlanta Medical Center, an academic medical center in Atlanta. Michael has authored several articles and served as an invited speaker on the principles and practices of value-based population health management. His insights on the unmet need for tools to improve the collection, aggregation, analysis, reporting, and utilization of disparate health-related data led to submission of a U.S. patent in 2017. He is a graduate of the University of Georgia and the Medical College of Georgia.
