Rick Slocum

Chief Investment Officer, Harvard Management Company

Rick Slocum joined Harvard Management Company as managing director and chief investment officer in March 2017. Along with Narv Narvekar, CEO of HMC, they have restructured the endowment’s investment operations to form a mostly outsourced investment model. They also repositioned the portfolio by increasing allocation to hedge funds, private equity and venture capital, while working with the University to identify the endowment’s optimal risk level. Previously, Mr. Slocum served as chief investment officer of The Johnson Company, a large single-family office based in New York City. Prior to that, Mr. Slocum was responsible for private assets and portfolio management at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. While at The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Rick joined the ILPA and became the Chair of the first Best Practices Committee. Working with David Parrish and a number of investor colleagues from other institutions, his committee created the first Model Term Sheet developed by the ILPA. Mr. Slocum also worked as a senior director at the Office of Investments at the University of Pennsylvania, both as a generalist, and subsequently covering public equity. He also worked for 3 different banks in New York over 20 years, both as a private debt and equity placement professional, and initially as a credit analyst at Chemical Bank. Mr. Slocum holds a BS and MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He currently serves on the investment committees for The Rockefeller Foundation, TIFF, Berklee College of Music and Constanter Foundation.
