Michael Hammett is the Chief Innovation Officer for the city of Phoenix, Az, leading innovation and the strategic use of data across the city. Since 2018, he has led the What Works Cities assessment process for the city, the national standard of excellence for data-driven, well-managed local government, achieving Silver level certification in 2020, and Gold in 2021. Prior to his current role, Hammett served as the city’s Interim Deputy Communications Director and its first Chief Service Officer, leading a variety of grant-funded citizen-engagement initiatives and innovation pilot programs, as well as the City’s National Service Program. He holds an M.S. in Global Technology and Development from the School for the Future of Innovation in Society and is a founding member of the alumni board for the new College of Global Futures, Arizona State University.
