Catherine Bonham, MD, joined UVA in 2018 as an assistant professor of pulmonary and critical care medicine and scientific director of the Interstitial Lung Disease Program. She specializes in caring for patients living with interstitial lung disease or pulmonary fibrosis, particularly those patients with sarcoidosis.

A Chicago native, Bonham graduated cum laude with an undergraduate degree from Harvard University before attending University of Michigan Medical School, where she received awards for “exceptional compassion” and “super patient care.” She completed a double residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at University of Michigan and then returned to her hometown to complete fellowship training in pulmonary and critical care medicine at University of Chicago.

During her fellowship and as a junior faculty member at University of Chicago, Bonham committed herself to scientific research in sarcoidosis and pulmonary fibrosis after realizing the urgent need for a better understanding of these diseases and new treatments for the patients living with them. She has received grant funding from the National Institutes of Health for her work. She also received the 2017 Science and Innovation award from the American Thoracic Society with one of the top four scientific submissions out of 6,000 submissions from around the world.

Bonham and her husband are proud parents of three children. In their free time, they enjoy barbecuing and being outdoors in beautiful Virginia.
