Andrew Friedson

Andrew Friedson, Ph.D., is director of Health Economics for the Milken Institute’s Research Department. He heads Research Department projects concerning health, health care, and related sectors. Before joining the Milken Institute, he spent over a decade in academia where he was an Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Colorado, Denver, with a secondary appointment in the Department of Health Systems, Management and Policy at the Colorado School of Public Health. He is the author of the textbook “Economics of Healthcare: A Brief Introduction” which is published by Cambridge University Press and used in classrooms around the country.

Dr. Friedson has wide expertise in health economics and has published peer-reviewed research on health behaviors, markets, and policy in premiere journals in economics, public policy, and medicine including the Journal of Public Economics, the Journal of Law and Economics, and JAMA Health Forum. His research has been covered in popular press outlets including the Economist, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal. Dr. Friedson received the Richard Musgrave Prize from the National Tax Association in 2014 and the Excellence in Research Award from the University of Colorado Denver College of Arts and Sciences in 2022. He holds a Ph.D. and an M.A. in Economics from Syracuse University and B.A.s in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Rochester.
